Birmingham’s Bromford Bridge racecourse held its last meeting on 21st June 1965. To commemorate the fortieth anniversary of its closure, West Midlands Racing Club Chairman Chris Pitt (author of the acclaimed ‘A Long Time Gone’) has joined racing historian Chas Hammond to produce the definitive story of racing in Birmingham - not just at Bromford Bridge but also at some forty other racecourses located in and around the city.

The book is called ‘When Birmingham Went Racing’ and is due for release on 13th June. With over sixty illustrations and a foreword by Jim Lewis, owner of triple Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Best Mate, its 226 pages contain stories of Classic winners bred in Yardley; Grand National heroes at Sutton Coldfield; lady jockeys at Small Heath races; pitched battles at Aston Park; pony racing in Oldbury and Deritend; point-to-points in Harborne; and warnings off in Four Oaks.

It tells of the history and atmosphere and also recalls the personalities – the racecourse tipsters, local jockeys and trainers - from the days ‘When Birmingham Went Racing’.
